CHARITABLE FUNDS
What type of giving is best for you? The VCF offers choices to meet your philanthropic needs.
Do you want the VCF to choose the grantee? Consider a discretionary fund, which leaves the annual grantmaking decisions to the Foundation to address the most pressing community needs as they arise. It's an excellent way to ensure that your philanthropy transcends the barriers of time and remains relevant.
Are you looking for a way to roll up your sleeves and become actively involved, recommending grant recipients? Then an advised fund may be right for you. Or do you want to provide ongoing support for an organization that you already know and admire? Establish a designated fund.
At the VCF, we help you choose the option that fits you best. To learn more about any of the following options, please contact one of our philanthropic advisors.
TYPES OF CHARITABLE FUNDS
Discretionary Unrestricted Fund
When you want to address Vermont's most pressing needs but allow the VCF to choose grantees.
Discretionary Field of Interest Fund
When you want to narrow your focus but allow the VCF to choose grantees in one or more large concerns, like the environment, the arts, or a specific community or region.
Advised Fund
When you want to take an active role in making recommendations for grants. Advised funds are an excellent vehicle for donors to set aside charitable dollars now and distribute them gradually over time. Donors may also designate their children, or others, as “successor advisors” to recommend grants from the fund. Upon the death of the last designated successor advisor, an Advised fund becomes a VCF Discretionary fund.
Designated Fund
When you want to provide permanent ongoing support for one or more favorite organizations. Designated funds can be established by an outright gift during the donor's lifetime or through a planned gift such as a bequest, charitable gift annuity, reminder trust, etc.
